View the CollectionCherry Blossom is the spring chapter of Android Plaza, a body of 1/1 post-paintings arriving as the bloom does. Each work begins inside a custom-trained generative model shaped by the artist's own visual grammar, then is painted into by hand — the brush re-entering the machine, the gesture returning to the image after the algorithm has had its say.
The blossoms flicker, smear, reconstitute. A drone hovers where a bird should be. A jet fighter streaks across a sky too blue to be innocent. A bumblebee settles on a branch with the patience of a creature unaware it is already an anachronism. This is the pastoral annotated by the present — cherry blossoms and surveillance, pollinators and ordnance, held in the same frame without apology.
Richter's blur asked what a photograph could still mean once painting had absorbed it. Android Plaza inverts the question: what does painting still mean once the image has been absorbed by the model? The answer, here, is not nostalgic. Beauty is not depicted. It is processed — and, surprisingly, survives.
Spring, rendered by the system that replaced us, still insists on arriving.
